Rimidi a Signature startup company of the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) at Georgia Tech, is among the top three opportunities for health care apps with its Diabetes+Me technology, according to a recent report by ACT The App Association.
“Atlanta-based Rimidi is one company showing the path forward with its Diabetes+Me App,” the report stated. “The company’s clinical studies demonstrate that it can produce better patient outcomes at reduced cost. Goldman Sachs projects that connected health solutions like Rimidi’s will reduce healthcare costs by $305 billion.”
Connected technology is on the cusp to dramatically change the healthcare landscape, according to the report. Healthcare providers are shifting from fee-for-service to value-based payments, and “the resulting incentives favor outcomes more than procedures,” according to the report.
“Diabetes is a chronic condition that impacts 29 million Americans. As the numbers continue to escalate, we are faced with not only a physician shortage, but a provider shortage,” Dr. Lucie Ide, Rimidi CEO, said. “Digital health tools like Diabetes+Me not only improve patient care, but can help address this challenge.”
The report noted 86 percent of clinicians say mobile apps will be central to patient health by 2020. Diabetes+Me allows patients to share medical information with physicians between office visits. A recent study published in Diabetes Technology by Desert OasisHealthcare in Palm Springs, Calif., showed that the Diabets+Me app was effective in helping to lower blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
Chronic condition management, personal fitness and wellness, and remote patient monitoring are top technology opportunities poised for growth, according to the report. The connected health market is expected to be valued at approximately $117 billion by 2020, and remote patient monitoring technology alone will reach $46 billion by 2017, the report stated.
“We have only seen the tip of the iceberg with connected health, but it’s clear this technology will have a profound impact on our society,” the report notes. “As more studies emerge demonstrating its role in improved health outcomes, industry growth will be substantial and swift.”
ACT is an organization representing software companies in the mobile app community. It released its fourth annual report in January 2016 on the state of the app industry, outlining how technology can reshape the healthcare landscape, among other sectors.
