OneCare At a Glance
If Brian Leslie has his way, consumers will soon be able to log onto a private social network dedicated to wellness and chronic care management. As President and CTO of OneCare, Leslie and his team have spent two years designing and building an open platform that simplifies, encourages and tracks care plan compliance while putting patients in control of their health information. Consider it the Facebook of the healthcare industry.
“We are passionate about patient-focused care solutions and truly believe that without putting the patient in control of their care and their data, we will never make the changes necessary to reverse the trends of chronic conditions and ever-increasing care costs,” said Leslie.
OneCare was launched by Leslie and Gary Austin, two serial entrepreneurs that have worked together on various healthcare IT-related ventures since 2004. That includes serving as co-founders of Clearwave, a self-service patient check-in kiosk for hospitals and medical offices. Their newest venture aims to provide individuals with a safe place to store sensitive healthcare information, as well as the ability to share that information with family and friends as motivation to stay healthy and connected.
Set to rollout in March to a pilot group of customers, OneCare’s social network features an interactive personal health record that puts individuals in control of who has access to their private health information. An open connectivity platform makes it easy to connect to devices like Fitbit, glucometers and blood pressure cuffs, as well as health and wellness apps and programs that can automatically load information into the health record. In addition, the system provides real-time goals, reminders and alerts for users, plus a motivation and reward system built on leading behavior modification principles.
“Our mission is to provide a platform and system that reduces hospitalization and ongoing costly health care for patients and families through innovative and comprehensive preventive care,” said Leslie. “We’re leveraging more than 10 years of health IT and startup experience and an amazing group of strategic partners to revolutionize care plan engagement.”
The buzz over OneCare is already building. The ATDC Select member startup gave a successful presentation at the Southeastern Medical Device Association conference, and recently announced a partnership with Aubrey Daniels International (ADI). As a result, ADI will develop educational content and programs that will run on the OneCare platform.
“A key strategic partner (and investor) for us is Aubrey Daniels International,” said Leslie. “They have several Fortune 500 customers that they provide with employee performance-based behavior training. However, they have not yet focused on employee wellness initiatives because they lacked real-time data. OneCare will provide data that shows how compliant each employee is with their care plan.”
The five-person startup has benefited from nearly $500,000 in angel investments, but will open a $3 million Series A investment round following the March launch. A member of ATDC for several years, Leslie said the accelerator has played a role in his startup’s success, providing business incubation services, networking opportunities and professional resources. The company plans to continue utilizing ATDC resources as they move into their next phase of growth.
