The Startup Chronicles: Nexpense, Never Do An Expense Report Again!

ATDC member company Nexpense is generating quite a bit of buzz. In the latest excitement, the company made the finals in the upcoming 2010 Women 2.0 Startup Competition. Jennifer Bonnett, founder and CEO of Nexpense, will present at the group’s 4th Annual Pitch Night on November 4 in San Francisco.

The story leading up to this latest accomplishment demonstrates how finding a market pain that resonates can lead to great things.

Nexpense was founded one year ago at Atlanta Startup Weekend to build a mobile expense reporting application for smart phones. The application allows users to capture expenses with their smart-phone and automates the back-end expense processing. Jenn’s Startup Weekend pitch attracted 19 team members for that first 48 hours of hectic concept-to-product building.

A nineteen person team can be a bit unwieldy, and after the initial excitement, the Startup Weekend team members scattered back to their real lives. The company might have ended there, but the idea struck a nerve. Never having to fill out an expense report again would be a dream come true for legions of business people and would save companies time and money. Hope from eager investors and potential customers spurred inquiry after inquiry.

Community interest in the concept and team behind Nexpense spurred a revised product and name and led to several pitches, including a second place finish in Startup Riot 2010. The company was selected to showcase at Venture Atlanta this year and officially launched their product at the mid-October conference. The Nexpense application is currently in alpha testing and has a great deal going for its first customers, something about “free for life”….

People universally despise dealing with expense reports and universally love Nexpense. Cheers to a great idea and talented founder. And thanks for healing the hurt!
