Phloem is an app to increase the efficiency of both log truckers and mills by allowing improved truck unloading and tracking of wood harvesting.
Phloem started in the Spring of 2016 within our existing business McCraw Energy. Seeing the existing need to bring the fragmented forest products industry into the digital age, work began on solving this.
The problem of truck unloading delays at mills has existed for many years, probably from the first truck delivery to a mill. Currently the logging industry just works around this problem by informing their truckers via radio or cell phone. With an estimated 9 million loads of wood delivered each year, just an average 5-minute delay works out to over 31,000 days of lost productivity.
Phloem is a unique product that will eliminate a major pain point in the logging business. Once the data is acquired, it can then be sold to mills for their sustainability marketing and wood security tracking. Further development of the system will include an “Uber” for wood application that will match available log trucks with logging crews needing hauling capacity.
Since there are no companies in this business, the biggest barrier to entry will be the early penetration of the market by Phloem. The technology used is off the shelf but there maybe the potential to patent certain aspects of the system.
Initial market will be loggers and log truck drivers. Once this market has been obtained then the data from this operation will be marketed to the mills via a subscription service for “Chain of Custody” verification of mill certification under the various schemes and to monitor wood movement for security purposes.
