Venture Capital Matchmakers

During my days as a venture capitalist, we never did a deal that was unsolicited.  Further, we rarely did a deal that did not come to us through a channel that we didn’t feel was, in some way, a personal connection with some level of referenceability.  That being said, there have always been services and sites out there that make promises of matching those in search of capital with those in search of investments.  This includes sites such as NuQuest, and Funding Post,  which have realized success.

I’d be interested to hear other opinions on this subject.  Investors, have you found deals through these types of services?  Entrepreneurs, has a services like this helped you find the money you were looking for?

As an entrepreneur: never. As a seed investor: never. Such services IMHO are a WOYFT.

Check out http://www.thefunded.com.

They are not trying to match deal with funds, but they are a great source of information about funds.

At GreenSpring Ventures in Atlanta early this decade, we often took unsolicited meetings with entrepreneurs… but never ever invested in one of such companies. All of our investments were made in deals that came through direct referrals. If the reference didn't take the time to tell us about the company then there was no hope.
